2015 NAIAS Debuts: 2016 Chevrolet Volt

2016 Chevrolet Volt Overview

On this year’s North American International Auto Show, one of the hottest green car debut was the promotion of 2016 Chevrolet Volt. Chevy said that they lay they ear to the ground and took into consideration opinions from the first generation vehicle owners and implemented some of these requests on the second generation vehicle. New model comes with one extra seat, illuminating charger and of course more all electric range, which is one of the things why this vehicle became so popular.

2016 Chevrolet Volt Exterior Styling

Before this promotion Chevy announced that the new model will come with one extra passenger space in the second row. After this announcement everybody expected that the new generation model will come with few adjustments on the outside as well, at lest a few inches longer wheelbase, or maybe a different shape. This wasn’t the case, and the new model comes with exactly the same dimensions as the last one. all the changes new generation model came with are all cosmetic and this is probably because of this vehicle being one of the most popular ones when it comes to exterior styling. People became fed up with futuristic electric cars like Toyota Prius, and they want a proper looking sedan or coupe, and that’s the card Chevy plays on when it comes to this model.

2016 Chevrolet Volt Interior

As we said earlier the biggest change in the 2016 Chevrolet Volt is the fifth additional seat in the second row. First generation vehicle came with two seats in the back row, and the longer central tack that came with plastic in the end which is made to prevent the third passenger to sit in the middle. Chevy now turn that plastic into the third seat, and decreased the size of other two seats as well. In theory three adult people can sit there, but they would feel much less comfort than they would expect, especially for the person sitting in the middle since the battery pack is placed right in front of the seat.

Other great new feature is the longer all-electric range which is not extended to 50 miles. In addition to this Volt is able to achieve great fuel efficiency of at least 50 mpg. At least that’s what Chevy announced, same as they announced that new model will come with fifth seat. Real mpg rate for the new generation Volt is actually 41 mpg, this is 4 miles bigger than the previous 37 rating, but when it comes to competition, this model still falls behind leading Toyota Prius which is able to achieve 50 mpg in combined conditions. New model comes with 1,5 liter four cylinder engine, with revised Voltec drive system. Electric motors can power the vehicle by themselves and can also be used as generators. New model also comes with larger battery, that has 18 kWh in opposing to last year’s 17 kWh. It is made out of LG chem lithium-ion cells.
