About Takata Corporation
One of the biggest stirs in the automotive world was caused by the big Takata airbags recall Complete list of models influenced by this recall is finally available on our web site, but before we go to the list, let’s find out a little bit more about this story.
Takata Corporation is a car parts company founded in 1933 by Takezo Takada. Back then this company was producing parachutes and other textile products. In the fifties this company tart explorations in car safety segment, after which they produced their firt series of seat belts. Later they start producing child restraint systems and they made the first crash test polygon, where they tested their products in real crashes. In the eighties they became a corporation and they spread their business to United States and South Korea. Their business continued to grow and at the beginning of the new millenium they bought German company called Petri AG and opened they new European headquarters in Germany. Since Petri was one of the their main rivals, this largely affected their business, in a good way of course.
Believe it or not the big recall everybody is talking about is not their first. In 1995 there was a big recall of large numbers of Japanese vehicles (more then 8 million), caused by defective seat belts, made by this corporation.
Big airbags recall started in 2013, when a few big companies announced they are recalling large number of vehicles due to airbags failures. Honda was one of the largest partner and they stated that they know about 2 deaths and more than 30 injuries caused by airbags delivered by this corporation. In only two months of 2013 more than 3,6 million vehicles have been recalled. Most affected were the vehicles produced by: Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, but also some American and European brands like Dodge, Ford and BMW.
All defective airbags came from Takata plant in Mexico, and the corporation admitted they made defective airbags, by storing chemicals in airbags in dangerous manner. they soon move all the production from Mexico to Germany and one year later another approximately 3 million more models were recalled, by some of the biggest car manufacturers.
Both American and Japanese driving safety agencies confirmed that increased humidity, that somehow get inside the airbags can cause explosive propellents to destabilize.
